sleep not, for livejournal doth murder sleep (or: insomniac randomness)
My calendar tells me that yesterday, along with cinco de mayo, was "Ascension Day." Hee.

(I should point out that this is not the same calendar as the one that keeps assigning random holidays to Australia that no one actually in Australia seems to have heard of. Apparently I have a collection of interesting calendars.)

... oh. Google informs me that this is an actual holiday, and were I Catholic or Anglican I would've known about it, and that I probably shouldn't be giggling at it.

This is a really interesting and cool gen Atlantis ficlet. It reminds me of Voyager and the White Star and how much I really dig on the idea of sort-of-living ships. I can't believe I didn't put two and two together before with the Ancient gene technology and figured out that this is high on the list of reasons why I love this show. Read and go "oooooh."

This is not a surprising fic kink with me, considering that I assign personality and sentience and feelings to inanimate objects all the time. (Behold the unlikely connection between The Velveteen Rabbit and Stargate: Atlantis.)

(aside: meyerlemon was going off -- rightfully, except for that brilliant one by azarsuerte -- on how irritating the "someone plays matchmaker!" cliche is in fanfic... would it be all right if it was a semi-sentient inanimate object? I think I'd be amused if a puddle jumper took it upon herself to try and trick the humans into getting together and having twins.)

You like living ships, and you have not watched Farscape? Forsooth.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it's actually quite a popular theme. My sister forced the Andromeda first season into my hand since I've always loved the captain/ship relationship and now OMG, it can be a REAL RELATIONSHIP. Well, it can be if I survive the cheesiness. :)

Well... unless the puddle jumper is mentally about eleven years old, and then it might. Because when I was eleven I totally had nothing better to do than plot and scheme to lock my teachers in a room together or whatever.

However, I will have to think more on potential Atlantis motivation for wanting people to hook up. The city could very much want to be populated again, since it is OMG LONELY, but if that were all it was she'd probably just sneak pheremones through the air vents and make everyone hook up indiscriminately.

Perhaps more useful would be to exploit Shep's genetastic connection to the city/jumper/etc. The city tries to give him what he subconsciously wants, either because the technology is sentient and has feelings for him and wants to make him happy in a simplistic way, or the technology isn't sentient at all and is just automatically manifesting his subconscious desires.

Hey, if Atlantis just wants population, the guys might be kind of irked that they're being studded out...

... or, well, the chicks on Atlantis are all pretty hot.

/gender stereotyping

The city will get progressively more pissed, too, as this whole phenomenon of birth control thwarts her plans.

I read this and totally decided that the city has a crush on John.

Aww, she so does. But probably in a more maternal way, I suspect.

Hmm. I'll have to think about this at the social thing I'm going to this afternoon. It's almost along the lines of my last vid.

I love fics about the living city. I really hope that they do more with the city itself in seasons to come. This is one of the few shows where I really don't mind if they just stay home, because home is just as alien as everywhere else. I wants to know her secrets, I do.

Maybe the puddle jumper is tired of all of the sexual tension. it makes the jumper nervous. When Shep is flying and frustrated because Nosex=frustrated Shep, maybe he is rough on the jumper's controls, and the jumper just wants him to be happy so he'll be more gentle. yeah... Happy Shep = happy jumper. the thing does read his thoughts, after all.

Atlantis is SO COOL!!! I seriously just want to hang out and play there. I have great desire to be a Mary Sue, omg.

HEEEEEE. Omg, I love that. Enlightened self-interest makes the jumper try to encourage Shep!sex by mysteriously malfunctioning and trapping him and Lizzie in the jumper for extended periods of timer, or by persuading the mother city to engage in similar shenanigans... hee.

ooh! if you get the city involved, you have a whole new ballgame. So many interesting opportunities!!

The Hallmark Department of Human Resources is on the line, dear, should I ask them to hold while you fetch your CV?

LOL. Asciension day is a .. I don't know how to say that in english... it's a day when you don't work, kids don't go to school...
And it's really great for us as the 1st May is also one of those days, and the 15 too... May is a great month ! It's like we always have something to celebrate. Although all I know about those celebrations is that WE DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO WORK ! And if ever we do, we earn twice our pay :D

I think we mostly just call it a "holiday." (Or a "bank holiday", for times when businesses are closed, or a "national holiday.")

*jealous of Europe*

thanks for the tip. That's kind of annoying when you have to write 3 lines when you don't know ONE word. :/

Heh - yeah! Ascension Day is actually a holiday in Sweden! We had yesterday and today off from school and work! So, yay for the fact that Jesus Christ finally left the planet! *dances*
