*suspicious*
By any strange chance, has anyone actually heard anything about boxedtvseries.com? Because its website seems to scream "I am a scam run by a fifteen-year-old!", especially because it's offering the complete series of The X-Files for $200... but... it's offering the complete series of the X-Files for $200! So, I ask. (Also, any of you who are 1) brave about internet shopping and 2) have a region-free DVD player, this site also has a PAL/NTSC complete Atlantis Season 1 set available already.)

I have received something of an ultimatum from the family to get my collection of taped-from-TV-since-the-year-1986 VHS tapes out of the linen closet and into the nearest landfill. It distresses me that it will cost A BAJILLION dollars to replace The X-Files and Voyager and whatever else I haven't replaced yet, so I've been putting off throwing them out. Of course, the easy answer here would to just Stop Being Attached to having every single episode of shows in my possession but, errrr... that's hard! On the whole, I've curbed my packrat tendencies (mostly by not allowing myself to touch knick-knacks, Happy Meal toys, etc, for fear that I will become Emotionally Attached), but TV shows in complete sets? I still have a very strong urge to hoard them all under my bed and bodily defend them, even if I don't watch them for years. I'm so not enlightened yet. *twitches a bit*

I think I'm in need of a sugar daddy.

Ooooh!!!! Yet...I'm so suspicious! Like even if it isn't a scam, are these cheap Asian imports or something? Does it matter? But $200!!!! For the whole series!!! If you discover that this is legit, do let me know!

Oh god no! You can't do that it would be... blasphemous and scandalous and it's so not allowed!

I still have a very strong urge to hoard them all under my bed and bodily defend them, even if I don't watch them for years.

We could be twins... *g*

hmmm....seasons 1-9 for $200?!?! wow....that's incredible! though, I don't really know if I'd trust it for that little money...

they already have atlantis s1?? it's already available somewhere???

(don't worry, I've been collecting VHS tapes too...TXF...SG1...Farscape...and other peoples tapes too when they don't want them anymore!...TXF...SG1...LoL:) I tell them instead of throwing them away to send them to me!! so you're definitely not the only one with a large tape collection...and i have absolutely no intentions of throwing mine away any time soon!)

Oddly enough, just knowing that these shows exist on DVD in their entirety is enough for me, unless I really do want to watch them all the time (see: Buffy). I guess the urge to hoard all my tapes of X-Files or the original BSG or whatever was more about *archiving for posterity* than about actually needing them in *my* posession. (I do still have certain Christmas specials from my youth on 12-year-old tapes, because as far as I know they aren't available on DVD. And what if I have the ONLY COPY in the WHOLE WORLD?!)

Librarian? Why, yes. Heh.

They're Asian versions. I'm not sure if they're actually licensed in Asia or not, which in itself is sometimes sketchy (at least, the legality), but I suspect the Atlantis ones are bootlegged versions.

I'm inclined to say no when they tell me the original Enterprise met "Genghis Khan." [snerk]

Avoid. They have Pretender seasons 1-3. This basically means that they're all bootlegs (possibly good ones though, I have no idea) because that show hasn't been released professionally outside of season 1 anywhere in the world. I know this because I have friends who have serious resources who would own them by now if someone had.

Or you could just wait a bit and let me buy them for you over the course of the next few years... ;) ::/sugar mama::

Well, Atlanis Season 1 is gradually coming out disc by disc in the UK, but I don't know if that has added up to a full season yet. I am having to talk myself out of buying them as really "I don't need them!" And there are reruns on channel 5 every Friday! And there is fic, to stave off cravings!

On the whole, I've curbed my packrat tendencies (mostly by not allowing myself to touch knick-knacks, Happy Meal toys, etc, for fear that I will become Emotionally Attached), but TV shows in complete sets? I AM NOT ALONE!!!!! I am a total packrat! It's only because I have them all on dvd that I have finally put all my old tapings of Farscape into a big back sack. (Though not actually into the trash yet.)

I get EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED to practically anything I touch. An old glow necklace that I bought for a pound 3 years ago at a fair, birthday cards, toys, string, clothes, anything. Anything to do with Farscape, Ben Browder (very emotionally attacted to Ben Browder, heh). SO EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED IS UNTRUE! AND AM NOT ALONE!!!

I would be your sugar daddy, but you'd have to wait until I get money again and am old (technically) *g*

I alas also need complete seasons of shows, but I am content until I find them on sale *yay!*

I wanted to buy season 9 of TXF (OMG, DRIPPER!) but when I went to the cashier he was all, "$485,500.00 plus your liver."

Ah, I think I'd rather burn it.

I'm with everyone else here--avoid the $200 XF boxed set deal. It's too good to be true.

Do you guys have a store called "The Beat Goes On" in the US? Up here in Canada, The Beat Goes On is a used CD and DVD store where you can sell CDs and DVDs that you no longer want and at the same time, buy used CDs and DVDs. I bought most of my X-Files DVD sets from them, and they were going for only $80 CDN per set. It's not as dirt cheap as the $200 deal, but at least these are the originals, and sometimes, the clerk counts your boxed set purchase as *two* DVDs that you bought, so you get two stamps towards your DVD purchase card, which, when completed, entitles you to one free DVD at an equal or lesser value from the next one you buy.

Dude, so too good to be true. Totally avoid. I horde my box sets, so hiding them may be good.

*hugs*

P.S. New post in my LJ. Not a rant, but still interesting.

They're definitely pirated copies from China. I saw them in China when I was there last Christmas. Although pirated, they are good quality. But that site is overcharging for them. In China, DVDs are 7 yuan per disk. So one boxset with 8 disks is 56 yuan, which is roughly US$7. So all 9 seasons of X-Files should only be about US$60.

Their FAQ:

How can you sell them so cheap?

We are not marking them way up, but rather depending on a large volume of sales to make our money, good for us good for you. They are legally manufactured overseas.

Hi, I wanted to know if these sets are Asian or foreign editions?

If by Asian or Foreign you mean "Are there Asian or some other language markings on the box's and DVD's?", the answer is yes there is. But all DVD's are factory made and new, they are all play in the English language. We are a bargain site and we sell content not flashy boxes. Our purpose is to provide you the opportunity to save money on your favorite sets just like other people do all over the world. The only difference I have been able to find so far is that the cover art on the box is different, and the disk markings are usually in two languages, it varies from set to set. I personally don't care if the box is brown, just as long as I can save a large amount of money, and still get to see my favorite shows in real DVD quality. I am a fan as well as a shopper, we do not sell pretty boxes, if your a collector and want the original box, then we suggest you buy else where and pay three times what we charge, your choice. But if you don't want to pay the high prices that we Americans are (in my opinion, unjustly) forced to pay, then our site is for you!

Will the boxes be the same as the ones I see on Amazon or BestBuy?

No they will not be. If your buying a box go pay the extra money for them at other sites. We sell content, not boxes. If you're a serious collector and the box is part of what your looking for, you need to buy elsewhere. If we could keep the price down buy selling the DVD's in plain brown wrappers we would. We sell quality DVD's in a way that saves the consumer money! We do everything possible to keep our prices low, so more people can afford to buy. Some of you have complained we don't have people answering the phones, but if we had to pay their salary and benefits it would add to the cost of the product, then more of you would complain, lol.

Any "official" FAQ that has lol in it, you better watch out! And they don't have anyone answering the phones? Can you say DVD burner and scam? If you're going to get them illegally then go ahead and download them for free (not that I'm saying do that!), http://www.torrentspy.com/directory.asp?mode=sub&id=235. You didn't hear that from me though!

Personally, I haven't been able to afford any boxed sets except for the SG-1 ones, and there is no way I'd willingly give up my Babylon 5 for ST:TNG tapes until I owned the DVDs.
Torrijohnliz4ever on August 17th, 2005 10:20 am (UTC)
The Stargate Atlantis one looks like it as Asian writing on it. I'd avoid them but it's your choice.

I think I'm in need of a sugar daddy.

Lol, we all do.
