DS9: Required Viewing!
rosewildeirish is looking to start smoking from the wonderful DS9 crackpipe of awesome! She figures she should start at the beginning of Season 4, since that's when things kick into high gear and the ratio of OMGHOLYAWESOME to ehhhhhhwhat? is a lot better. So she asked me for my opinions on which of the first three seasons she needs to see. (Think of all the stuff she'll miss! The Jake & Nog Show! Bashir being a spaz! The Provisional Government! The CARDASSIAN VOLES!)

I picked out the ones I think are key -- but those of you who are DS9 peeps, chime in! She's not spoilerphobic (I don't think -- are you?), so you can discuss plot happenings in here. And FYI, she doesn't like Jadzia, so I avoided Jadzia-heavy episodes... but you can mention those if they're your favorites for my sake.

Google reveals this website for a list of episode titles. Clicking the titles seems to bring up the synopses for the seasson.

Off the top of my head, I think you might want to see the following episodes (with a few "oh, and this happened in this episode" fill-ins from your loving friends like me in between). Ones you really MUST see because they can't just be explained are in bold:

Season 1:
  • "Emissary" - Series premiere. WORMHOLE ALIENS = AWESOME.

  • "In the Hands of the Prophets" - establishes some important secondary characters & political situation on Bajor

Season 2:
  • "The Homecoming" / "The Circle" / "The Seige" -- the 3-part arc at the beginning of the season is... well, you could probably skip it, but I love Bajor and it's some crazy Bajor action, and the first hinting of the awesome way that DS9 does multi-part arcs. :) So you don't need to watch these for future plottiness, but they're pretty rad and forward a lot of politicking & Vedek Winn.

  • "The Maquis Part I & II" - This episode is... eh, these two aren't some of my omgfavorites, but they DO set up a lot of stuff that happens in seasons 4 + 5, so you can watch them if you feel like it. Unless you've seen Voyager, and feel like you've got a pretty good handle on who the Maquis are.

  • "Crossover" - OMG. WATCH EET. MIRROR UNIVERSE IS WIN.

  • "The Collaborator" - if you decide you like the Bajor Arc, this is a good one to watch. Otherwise, we can fill you in. I actually didn't see this one until a few years ago, and was all "OH MY GOD, THIS MAKES SENSE NOW!"

  • "The Jem'Hadar" - The first real Dominion episode. They're mentioned a bunch earlier in the season in a "who are they anyway?" sort of way, but this is a good one to see.

Season 3:
  • "The Search, Part I & II" - DOMINIONNNNN!

  • "Past Tense, Part I & II" - Not necessary for plot at all, but this was my favorite DS9 episode for YEARS, because I <3 time travel.

  • "Life Support" - if you decide you like Bareil or Winn, watch this one. Otherwise we can fill you in.

  • "Heart of Stone" - liminalliz will want you to watch this one, because Odo & Kira are stuck on a planet.

  • "Through the Looking Glass" - FUN FUN FUN.

  • "Improbable Cause" & "The Die is Cast" - important Cardassia and Dominion plotty things happen here.

  • "The Adversary" - season finale, WATCH WATCH WATCH.

AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Ps, thanks to you, I have decided to JUST DO IT and get s4 and 5. And I am REALLY STRUGGLING WITH MYSELF because I sort of want s3 too.

"Heart of Stone" - liminalliz will want you to watch this one, because Odo & Kira are stuck on a planet.
OR ARE THEY??????? Also, I agree with this comment. IT'S IMPORTANT SRRS BZZ THAT OCCURS IN THAT EPISODE AND I AM DYING TO HACTUALLY SEE IT.

ps. I AM SO CONFUSED ABOUT WHO THE MAQUIS ARE. I JUST KNOW THAT THEY'RE IN ALL THE SHOWS AND V. IMPORTANT TO BAJOR RELATED THINGS AND I was watching the end of this Voyager episode before the DS9 rerun came on and the Maquis people on the crew had taken over the ship and I got all confused and delighted to see a Bajoran in a hallucination of Tuvok... errr. I NEED TO READ UP ON THESE GUYS.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY NEED TO SEE THE SEARCH PARTS ONE AND TWO.

My favorite all things trek website of information is: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/ I go there about six million times a day.

other episode recs:

SEASON ONE:
- Q-Less - because Sisko hitting Q inna face is something you really just need to see.
- Duet - an often spoken of Bottle Show in which there is intense Bajor vs. Cardassia angst and a fabulous, fabulous, fabulous pay off in the climatic scene with the Cardassian guy and then, of course, the ending. A++

SEASON TWO
- Invasive Procedures - yeah, it's a trill episode, but if you're a smallville fan, IT HAS BABY LIONEL LUTHOR. I spent the entire episode with my jaw dropped to see him so young and cherublike. (also: great scifi happenings in the ep and Jadzia spends a lot of it unconscious)
- Necessary Evil - if you watch any of the episodes I'm recommending, WATCH THIS ONE. Yes yes, my obsessive shippery heart has an agenda here, but it shows TEROK NOR UNDER CARDASSIAN RULE vs. how nice Deep Space Nine is (the hilarious difference: lighting). But there's some FABULOUS acting from Rene and you really get a better handle on WHY ODO IS WHAT HE IS and you can see how beautiful Nana is with long hair!!! I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE THAT EPISODE.

Little Redmylittleredgirl on September 10th, 2008 04:40 pm (UTC)
YES YES SEASONS 4+5 ARE NECESSITIES FOR LIZZEN.

You have recc'd some GREAT episodes! I LOVE "Duet." LOVE IT SOOOO. I think I quoted bits of it in a paper in high school once, LOL. I didn't like Q-Less much, really, despite the punchings....

Invasive Procedures is = AWESOME, and once upon a time I started a fik about What If Verad Took Off Through The Wormhole But Jadzia Didn't Die, and it was making up to be a Julian/Jadzia ROMANTIC ANGSTFEST, but then I sort of drowned myself in pages of medicalbabble and got bored.

And NECESSARY EVIL is really good. REEEEEALLY. I agree, rosewildeirish! Watch it for goodness!
tarkheena lizzeeen: st [anguish in your eyes]liminalliz on September 10th, 2008 05:46 pm (UTC)
"Duet" is amazing and I'd love to get my hands on it and watch it again - that confession scene in the jail was remarkably done.

DO YOU STILL HAVE VARIOUS BITS OF DS9 WIPs? I WOULD LOVE TO READ THEM.

Necessary Evil just blew me away. My favorite moment being WHEN I REALIZED ONE OF ODO'S MAIN CHARACTERISMS as he looks LIKE A BEATEN AND ABUSED PUPPY when Dukat is all OMG YOU ARE SO COOL. THE CARDASSIAN NECK TRICK! I WANT TO SEND YOU AROUND TO ENTERTAIN THE TROOOOPS. And here I am, having watched the series in an assbackwards way, thinking: YOU ARE ASKING A FOUNDER TO BE A FREAKSHOW TO LAUGH AT? THIS IS WHY THEY HATE YOU SOLIDS.

Have I mentioned that I heart I heart I heart I heart Dukat as a villain???
Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 10th, 2008 07:26 pm (UTC)
DO YOU STILL HAVE VARIOUS BITS OF DS9 WIPs? I WOULD LOVE TO READ THEM.

I might! BUT OMG, they were probably written when lilred was in HIGH SCHOOL and therefore are full of embarassment and shame and "BUT I LOVE YOUUUUU!"s. Oh my.

The Cardassian neck trick!!! I love that that keeps coming up. People randomly mention it throughout the series, I think. I WANT TO SEEEEEE!!

It is very interesting for you to be watching the series so backwards! For us the big reveal was much more shocking! "OMG. FREAKSHOWS ARE = FOUNDERS, OMG." It is crazy!

DUKAT IS WINNNNNNN!! Okay, except for that one episode where he and Sisko are on a planet and - I just don't know what to do with that one. I mean, the crazy is awesome, but the way it's done leave me a bit "waaaah!" But OH DUKAT. He is so Shakespearian and FABULOUS. I love himmmmm!!!!!

DS9 IS SO EPIC AND THEREFORE EPIC WIN.
tarkheena lizzeeen: st [oooh that kind of girl]liminalliz on September 10th, 2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
OMG HIGH SCHOOL AGED FIC. THE LULZ!!! <333

DO WE NEVER GET TO SEE HIM DO THE CARDASSIAN NECK TRICK? WHAT???? I was sure we'd see it at some point. AIEEE.

I AM WRITING FIC ABOUT ODO BEING WITH TEH GREAT LINK and I have angst because I need to know more about how the Founders work as a species and how the link *feels* in the canon cuz I'm making so much up and oh noes, what if I'm jossed because I JUST HAVEN'T WATCHED ENOUGH CANON. More hours in the day, please!!

OMG WHY ARE YOU A BIT "WAAAAH" FROM THE EPISODE "WALTZ"??? It ends with Sisko saying IT'S HIM OR ME and Dukat has hallucinations of ALL MY FAVORITE DS9 CHARACTERS (seriously, I laughed and laughed and laughed when ALL OF THEM showed up in his mind as evol hallucinations). TELL ME MORE.

EPIIIIIIIIIIIIC.

I vaguely recall having a conversation with someone years ago about DS9 without having watched it and wondered if the show got a claustrophobic feel because they didn't go anywhere, they're stuck on the station. I HAVE NEVER ONCE FELT THAT THEY'RE TRAPPED (and if they are trapped, it's part of an epic plot!) (which reminds me OMG I NEED TO SEE CHILDREN OF TIME SO BADLY!!!!!!!!!)

Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 10th, 2008 07:43 pm (UTC)
"CHILDREN OF TIME" IS THE MOST AMAZINGEST EPISODE. I can't even handle how great it is. OH EM GEEEEE!!!

No Cardassian Neck Trick!! :'('''''!!

You need to watch more canon quickly! Hopefully your dvds will arrive sooooooon!!!

I will have to watch "WALTZ" again! I remember when I watched it long ago I was all "... this episode makes me uncomfortable." I don't quite remember why, I just felt like I was watching things jump the shark because Dukat lost it so seriously. But you love it, so I will watch again soon and report back!

OMG, yah! People always think they're trapped! But sweeties, you have never watched pre-Defiant episodes, so you do not knoowwwww the feeling of "hmm, we can only go places in crappy runabouts!" But I'm happy with Bajoran politicking all day. :)
tarkheena lizzeeen: st [talk about your cranky aliens]liminalliz on September 11th, 2008 12:26 am (UTC)
I've read about it, I've read the Kira/Odo scenes in the script, I've looked at the screencaps and I STILL KNOW I WILL BE BLOWN AWAY WHEN I HACTUALLY SEE IT. OMG. THE AWKWARDNESS OF THAT LAST SCENE WHERE OUR ODO IS ALL. UM. OKAY. SO NOW YOU KNOW. AND UM. THE OTHER ME KILLED EIGHT THOUSAND HUMANS THAT AREN'T EXACTLY RED SHIRTS, THEY'RE EVERYONE'S CHILDRENS' CHILDRENS' CHILDRENS' ETC CHILDREN BECAUSE HE LOOOOOOOOOVES YOUUUUUUUU. asldjfalskjdflkjl AAAAAAAAH.

SADNESS!!!!!!!!

I KNOW. It hurts my soul that I can't watch it all IMMEDIATELY. S5 should arrive this Saturday and then S4 next week. (CRAZY PANTS)

"Waltz" REALLY AMAZED ME. But I saw it AFTER I had seen season 7 where Dukat has his shit together in Crazy Pah-Wraith-ville, so this crack in his personality/thinkyness worked for me? IDK?? WATCH IT AND REPORT BACK.

SERIOUSLY. BAJOR POLITICKING IS THE MOST FASCINATING SUBJECT. Everytime I watch anything else Trek, I EXPECT IT and get disappointed when I don't see Bajorans or Cardassians. TROOFAX.
Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 11th, 2008 04:00 pm (UTC)
OMG. I love that episode even moar than for just the Kira/Odo thing! It is SO MUCH AWESOME. Srsly, I was rooting for Kira to die, because the peeps on the planet were THAT AWESOME. And Odo lived with those peeps for HUNNERDS OF YEARS!! It is CRAZY BATSHIT OMG.

I will watch "Waltz" and report back for sures when we get to it in our marathon!! I'll bet you're right and knowing what happens after makes it super super awesome. :)

BAJOR POLITICKING >>>>> EVERYTHING!! OMG, I love it. "They can't even decide that it IS a government so they call it PROVISIONAL!"
Rose Wilde-Irishrosewildeirish on September 10th, 2008 04:58 pm (UTC)
- Q-Less - because Sisko hitting Q inna face is something you really just need to see.

"You hit me. Picard never hit me."

heeeeeeeeeeeeee.
tarkheena lizzeeen: st [there's something going on]liminalliz on September 10th, 2008 05:48 pm (UTC)
I was watching the TNG finale last night and there are SO MANY MOMENTS in that episode where Picard really needs to punch Q inna face SO HARD and he never does. OH TEH RESTRAINT. SISKO >>>>> EVERYONE.
Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 10th, 2008 07:33 pm (UTC)
HAHAHAHA. The series finale of TNG is SO AWESOME. It is my fave of all Trek finales. :-D :-D :-D (Because "What You Leave Behind" leaves me sadddddd!)

Sisko is SO TOTALLY >>>> EVERYONE!!!! I love all Siskos. OMG. THE SISKOOOOOOOO! And Jake & Jacob and Jennifer and OMG, SISKOS!

Let's add "Explorers" to the list of S3 must-seees!! For it is Jake and Ben careening around the universe in a tin can. FABOO.
pellucid: Kira smilepellucid on September 10th, 2008 05:11 pm (UTC)
I second the recs of "Duet" and "Necessary Evil" VERY, VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not yet finished with season 2, so I can only speak up to "The Maquis, 1 & 2," but up until that point, at least, those two would be my VERY TOP TWO CHOICES BECAUSE KIRA PWNS EVERYONE EVER WITH HER EX-TERRORIST WAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND ODO ROCKS A LOT, TOO!!!!!!!!!
tarkheena lizzeeen: st [we'll always have paris]liminalliz on September 10th, 2008 05:48 pm (UTC)
OMG KIRA THE TERRORIST. <333333333333 I love her character SO MUCH.
Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 10th, 2008 07:36 pm (UTC)
You have SO MUCH GOODNESS ahead of you!!!! :-D

"Duet" is such a great episode, and "Necessary Evil" is really really well-done. I know you love that one for true. :)

DS9 could so never happen now with the way it glorifies terrorism. I love my crazy terrorist show!
Lanna: FOR THE WIN!lanna_kitty on September 10th, 2008 09:24 pm (UTC)
because I am a dork, MEMORY ALPHA!!! which combines Trek and Wiki's and is generally the most awesome thing EVAR for episode summaries, in depth discussion and reference.

other than that I am no help because I didn't see DS9 in order c.c and I am missing whole sections of seasons.

HOWEVER if you are looking to catch up on the first three seasons? read the MA articles of season 1-3. Faster than watching the eps and it covers the pertinent points.
Little Red: trek - sisko niners - nos'mylittleredgirl on September 11th, 2008 04:01 pm (UTC)
BUT OMG, YOU MUST STILL WATCH THE ONES IN BOLD, FOR THEIR WINNINGNESS CANNOT BE CONVEYED BY SUMMARY.

That's all. :)

You must watch all of DS9 then, too!! Complete DS9 viewings for EVERYONEEEEE!!

This somehow reminds me of that lovely scene in "Rejoined" where Jadzia begs Julian to come to dinner with her & Lenara. He's all "... I REALLY should say no... but you KNOW I won't. *SIGH*" Because Jadzia's so preeeetty. I love it. :)
