disjointed veryspoilery thoughts on teh Big Damn Movie:
General life yayyy!! It has been so very long since I have seen a movie in this theatre, and it was a matinee, and therefore did not cost me my firstborn, and there was getting out and partying with humans, and now I will discuss the film. And by "discuss" I mean "flail briefly."

It was a truly fantastic movie that was SO MUCH FUN to watch. OMGFUN. It was a great ride!

Aside from the ABOVE ALL CAPS OF TEARS AND RAGE, there were really only minutes that I didn't totally enjoy watching, duuuude. Basically, and I know EVERYONE will defriend me now... I really didn't like Kaylee in this. And so I was, to Gira: "She had nothing to do!" and Gira's all "Well, except have sex with Simon. Which was all she was about in the series anyway." Which made me go "OH MY GOD, IT IS SO TRUE" and I think that's why I just can't love Kaylee the way everyone else loves Kaylee, even though she's adorably sweet and I'd want to just bake her cookies all the time in real life, because I don't really like Kaylee and Simon as a romantic pairing, necessarily. Though I could start to see the appeal of Mal/Inara in this, which I had never seen before. I am seeing the light ONE STEP AT A TIME. *shrugs* No one wants to hear me complain! OMG, MOVIE WAS FANTASTIC!

Gira and I CLUNG to each other's hands until we were BRUISED the whole movie. *finger cramps*

And I understand now why Lizabee has made River her ROLE MODEL OF POWER, because that didn't make much sense until I saw the movie. YAY RIVER!

And and and I totally didn't get that they were tooling around ONE solar system this whole time! In the first thirty seconds of the movie there was a whole lot of "Ohhhhhhhh!" from me. All along I thought this was a galactic thinggy and when they talked about The Rim or whatever they call it, they meant the galactic rim. Never mind! I have been educated!

Was I the only one who had a moment of "omg, they're TOTALLY going to have them all die and the Important PSA not get released just to fuck with us, aren't they!" when Mal and The Dude were fighting up on that ledge thing?

It rocked hardcore! I am so flailingly grateful that people made me watch the series and let me come along to the screening, joy joy joy. :) They all went out to dinner, but I am going to go sleep in front of the Sox game now.

Well, that WAS Kaylee's role in the film, so it made sense that she had to get the exposition laid out as quickly as possible. I'll just hope that she would've had an arc of her own if the series had run longer. :)

It was some beautiful closure, yes. I can't even imagine how great it is for the people who watched Firefly from day one.

We have DAMAGED FINGERS because of this movie!

I'm afraid I agree about Kaylee. Part of it was that she just wasn't central to the plot, but I didn't like how she was just obsessed with getting Simon. I mean, she was sort of in the series too, but that wasn't all she did. Her sweetness just didn't come off in this. I'm kind of wishy-washy on Simon/Kaylee too. There's attraction there, but I think that under any other circumstances, it'd never happen.

But River was awesome. I mean, really, really awesome. I am so in awe of Summer Glau – I don't think there are many actresses who can pull off crazy, brilliant, warrior, and graceful all at once.

Well, you're starting to see the appeal of Mal/Inara while I'm beginning to see the appeal of Mal/River. Curses. ;)

...... Mal/River!?

I must have missed that episode. Because that idea frightens me a lot at the moment. Though, rationally, I suppose it should frighten me less than Simon/River, and it DISTURBS ME that it doesn't. *mentally pairs up River with everyone in my head to see which one is LEAST upsetting* I'm really very confused on 'shippiness in this fandom so far. I don't like the omgcanon UST pairings so much, though Mal/Inara got better because I started to reallyreallyreally like Mal, and so now it's "well, HE likes Inara, and I like HIM, so he should get what he wants! Except he shouldn't, because the angstyhotness is better, but he should at least WANT what he wants." On the whole, I'm really quite 'ship-free on the show, which is weeeeeeird.

I've been wanting to do reshuffle drabble exercises -- where I pair up random pairings in a fandom for very short things to sort of try them out -- and maybe Firefly would be a good venue. Except that I am yeeeears behind in the fandom curve, so might want to just let this one go by. :(

RIVER IS SO AWESOME. She just pwned that movie. I imagine I will be unconsciously mimicking her eye movements and head tilts for the next day or so. ;)

YES!! That was SO GOOD! And OMG WASH!!!!

See, I like Mal/Inara and think Kaylee/Simon is adorable (plus I think Simon and Mal are both extremely hot, and hence I was happy to get shirtless!Mal and shirtless!Simon). But AWESOME MOVIE. Gotta spend next weekend showing astrum_presul the series and then go again. Cause that totally rates going again.

I think I like Mal as a character just that much better now that I have seen him shirtless. Mmmmm. I also wasn't that into Mal/Inara in the series, but am now totally warming up to it! It leads to him being shirtless!

I literally bounced into the theater, and practically stormed out of it. It's not that I didn't like it - I'm sure when I digest I'll find the glee in it - but I was just disappointed with some of the choices. And to me, Kaylee wasn't Kaylee, nor was Simon Simon, and Book certainly wasn't Book. (Since when is he Mal's counselor and advisor? I know time is supposed to have passed, but that's just a complete 180 in their relationship.) *sigh*

And they killed Wash. That just made me mad. I guess because there's been all this talk of carrying on in one form or another, and if you're planning to carry on, you just don't go killing off characters higgledy-piggledy.

*sigh* Sorry. I shouldn't be venting at you. I'm going to go work on fic now.

My sister's friend who went with us informed me that Book had to die because of STAR WARS. "It's all because Obi-Wan died!" I suppose this means Book also had to become Obi-Wan in order to have to die.

Sister also flailed at me about that in the theatre. "How are they supposed to make another show if EVERYONE IS DEAD!?" Her dad said that those actors probably wanted out, and only agreed to do the movie if they were promised an escape since they've become more famous or something since then. *shrugs* He said this with a Weight Of Authority like he actually heard it somewhere, but her dad is kind of known for doing that even when he makes stuff up. ;) It messes with our heads.

*snuggles you lots* No, 'tis okay! I am a safe place for venting about this movie, as I thought it was OMG GREAT FUN! but am not as emotionally attached to it one way or the other as, er, most people, because I only got into the show a few months ago!

(meekly)I, er, really identify with Kaylee to almost scary levels, actually? Cause she's the sorta Whedon character that I identify with, much like early Willow and Tara. Not so much with later Willow, though.
Little Red: sg - fluffier than thou - lyssiemylittleredgirl on October 3rd, 2005 04:11 pm (UTC)
Hey, I did say I'd adore her in real life! :) (And I'm the cute hick in real life, too... err...) I just... errr... hrm. I don't know. It seems like the extent of her character (in the movie particularly) is to be "hey, I'm CUTE!" Which doesn't bother me in small children on TV, strangely enough, but eh, I'd rather she really have an arc of her own. *shrugs* But one comment down from you, the Kaylee!awesomeness was explained to me, and now I'm going to watch everything again from a new enlightened Kaylee-rocks perspective!
redbeardredbeard on October 1st, 2005 06:38 am (UTC)
Kaylee is awesome because she is what makes the ship WORK. It was not emphasized at all in this movie, which miffed me somewhat, but the thing about Kaylee is that, sans her, the ship just ISN'T. She is, in many ways, the person with the firmest grounding in the real world, and it is because of that grounding that she makes things BE and DO. She's the one whose feet actually are on the ground, and the one who sees the world for the joy in it and the function. That's why she is and always has been awesome. But, yes, the movie had so much in it, that she got short shrift.
Little Red: gleee! - nenyamylittleredgirl on October 3rd, 2005 04:12 pm (UTC)

I get it now! I totally didn't understand why everyone loved Kaylee when I found her somewhat irritating, and now you've explained it, and I will rewatch the show with NEW EYES.

OMG ME TOO!! I soo thought it was a big Star Wars flying around the galaxy thing....but it was just ONE solar system!! :| How hard can it be to catch a bunch of people within the constraints of ONE solar system!!

AND OMG THEY KILLED WASH *dead* How dare they!! And Kaylee annoys me too but she has her fun moments.

Heee *Loves Jayne*

I guess that's why they didn't push that point on the show!! We're all so used to real space-faring shows that it wouldn't have worked as well. It seems weird that the outlying planets aren't all FROZEN now, though. Whatever. *hides science in a closet*

JAYNE WITH A GUITAR!!! Absolutely fantastic. :) I think he was gonna break out into the 'Hero of Canton'.

I was in shock the first time I saw Wash die, and when the others started getting hurt I swear I was thinkin' "I thought he wanted a sequel!!! How's he gonna do that if he kills everyone!!!!"

'Dear Buddha, I'd like a pony and a little plastic rocket.' That line rules!

And Summer, way cool.
Little Red: gleee! - nenyamylittleredgirl on October 3rd, 2005 04:15 pm (UTC)
HE SO SHOULD HAVE, OMG. That would have been awesome! I LOVE JAYNE FOREVER.

I swear I was thinkin' "I thought he wanted a sequel!!! How's he gonna do that if he kills everyone!!!!"

I started thinking that maybe the sequel thought was all a big ruse and he really was going to just pull the rug out from everyone in a big dramatic parallel to the show getting cancelled. *eeps*

'Dear Buddha, I'd like a pony and a little plastic rocket.' That line rules!

Ahahaha, it so does! But I saw that and went "wasn't that already in one of the episodes?" because I'd seen that bit so many times on Sci-Fi!

I like my romances... and I'd grown interested in the Simon/Kaylee relationship... but I thought the resolution of it was completely not needed. Sure, I liked the confession but did we really needed to see them get together? And with River watching?

And yep, Wash *sniff*
Little Red: b5 - all alone in the night - thatfangirmylittleredgirl on October 3rd, 2005 04:18 pm (UTC)
And with River watching?

Ahahaha, I'm actually glad they did that, even though it's wrongwrongwrong... because to me, the reason the Simon/Kaylee relationship won't work now is because he really can't be with anyone except River (although not in a physically incestuous way as much as an emotionally incestuous way).

Though, as far as the plot of the movie goes... I think they set it up such that they had to do the on-screen resolution thing like that. *shrugs* I could have done without it, too.

but, but Kaylee managed to fix the ship in the series while having sex IN THE ENGINE ROOM (because she is that turned on my engines). And that is why she is on the ship in the first place. She is AWESOME for that reason alone. Actually, that is what made me love her.

*sigh* I'm still stubbornly clinging to my psychotic Mal/Kaylee UC 'ship. And I love Kaylee because she keeps the 'ship running, and I'm an engineer, and I relate to her best of all the Firefly characters, and well...yeah. Plus I friggin' adore Jewel Staite.

I will preface this by saying that I intentially clicked on the LJ cut and knew I walking into spoiler space, but waaaah! Now I want to cry.

Maybe at least now I won't wail when I actually go see the movie in the theater.

Oh, and being the spoiler whore I am, I already knew about Wash. And as much as I'm deeply in love with Mal/Inara, I'm now thinking this paves the way for Zoey/Mal. I'm sick, I tell you, sick.
