and ribbons by Napoleon
I'm completely burnt out at my job. Until this week, I thought I was just being a sissy, but external sources say the pressure and demands and the 10-hour-days-with-no-breaks are actually excessive, especially for what I am and am not being paid, so I feel better about that.

And I'd just come to the realization that I could make more money and have less stress (and fewer overtime hours!) at a different job that was pure admin... when I get an email telling me that I will FINALLY get my own business cards!

And I'm a happy camper again, because, omg! Business cards!

I AM SUCH A SUCKER.

I'm lobbying to have my official title be "Unlicensed Office Wench."

I get my own business cards soon too! I am also disproportionately excited! Yay! :D

That's no good about the hours, though.
Little Redmylittleredgirl on September 5th, 2006 11:29 pm (UTC)
We should exchange them and pretend to network!

10-hour-days-with-no-breaks !!

Yeah. Too much. I was appalled to find this quote this morning (coincidence?) in a cnn article: "Almost all of the developed world has legislation limiting work hours, except for the United States"
One of the top-10 reasons why I think The Netherlands is a much better place to live.

Well, actually, it's not exactly legal here either... but it's "the way it is in this industry," so that's how things are structured. I hear there is a secretary's union somewhere, though...
ornithoptercatornithoptercat on August 30th, 2006 09:57 pm (UTC)
Actually, it's decidedly NOT legal. So far as I know, breaks are required by law, and so is overtime pay if you're on an hourly wage and working more than 40 hrs/wk.
rokie on August 31st, 2006 12:00 am (UTC)
I second this. It's definitely not legal. From what I was told at a few of my otehr jobs, you're required by law to get a 15min break every...4? hours...or a lunch break if you're working fulltime...or some combination of the two...or something. my memory on this is kind of fuzzy...I learned it all when I was a cashier at Home Depot, but that was a few years ago and I forget.

Maybe they're laws by state?
miekecmiekec on September 1st, 2006 05:39 pm (UTC)
Yes, breaks are required, and overtime pay probably too. But nothing says they can't set the hours for the job to be 12 hours a day, with 2 1-hr breaks somewhere in there....
Little Redmylittleredgirl on September 5th, 2006 11:30 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm salaried, but I *am* able to put in for overtime, so that's good. :) And... I like money at all, but I also like SLEEP, so I'm in a bit of a bind.

My "little sister" and I once had this conversation about how we'd know when we'd be "real adults". She said that hers was when she had her own set of matching towels. I said that mine was when I had my own business cards. So yeah, I totally know.

Now I want to go out and buy matching towels. MY TRANSFORMATION WILL BE COMPLETE! :)

Business cards are LOVE!

My job totally suckered me in with my box of cards and their cute little happy logo and omg, it's actually pretty evil now that I think about it...

I want to watch Cupid now so badly!

And oooh! Mines are double-sided and one side is green like our building and the other side has our pretty logo! I am finally deserving of business cards!

... and work just called me. I'M NOT PICKING UP, RAH. But I'll totally check the message in one sec. *sigh*

I'd be more content with my new job if I got my friggin parking permit. I haven't gotten a ticket yet but I want it, dammit. I want it to be known to all I am FACULTY/STAFF now and not a student anymore thankyewverymuch.

It is so all about the window dressing. :)

Miiiieeeera!!! We have not spammed crazy fanfics at each other in far too long.

And I imagine Weir and Teyla would give exactly the look in your icon if confronted with the Spice Girls.

I got a box of 500 a year ago, and I still have 475. I gave the 25 away to family and friends.

The morale of this story is to look for a new job. ;-)
ornithoptercatornithoptercat on August 31st, 2006 10:08 pm (UTC)
You can always just get business cards made yourself. You can even print your own and they can say whatever you want (Little Red, SciFi Fangirl Extraordinaire!).
Little Redmylittleredgirl on September 5th, 2006 11:36 pm (UTC)
I have those! Little Red, Secret Agent. :)
Little Redmylittleredgirl on September 5th, 2006 11:35 pm (UTC)
But I actually get to use mine FOR my job! And bwahahaha, one of my coworkers says I can come with him to young professionals meetings and network. Or not, but I can at least send them to family and friends. ;)
