So at work, I just told everyone that I am SCARED THAT I AM GOING TO DIE IN SURGERY TOMORROW because omg, they will stick a TUBE down my throat and I HATE that and someone says they have to PARALYZE YOUR LUNGS and and...

Coworker: "They don't stick a tube down your throat for general anesthesia."
Me: *pauses semi-hysterical tirade* "What?"
Other coworker: "Yeah, dude, they just stick you with an IV. You still breathe on your own."
Me: "... Oh. Well, I guess I'm okay then."

Anyway, my day has improved, liek, a hundred-fold now that I no longer need to call everyone I've ever known and Make Peace with them before having my LUNGS PARALYZED tomorrow. I have zero fear of needles (aha! I saw like half of you twitch), so if that's all there is, I'm chill.

Comment-spam, especially in ficlet form would be most welcome! However, if any of you send me links about how many people actually die from oral surgery, I will HAUNT YOU FROM THE GRAVE, OMG, AND NOT IN THAT FUN PATRICK SWAYZE WAY.

p.s. Surgery scheduled for 9 AM tomorrow. Please disregard all LJ posts made from then until, liek, Saturday, because they will probably consist of me waxing on about the meaning of life to be found in a croissant, or something equally deep. (See... there's LIFE... and it's all... like rolled around itself... and if you just leave it on the counter it gets all CRUSTY...)

"They don't stick a tube down your throat for general anesthesia."
*blinks* ...Uh? Then how come I got one when I had my shoulder operation? My throat hurt like a bitch for a week. 0_0; But it's not lung paralysis exactly.

Guh. Yes, you did see me twitch at the mention of the N word. I hate them.

Hee. I think I'll go look at the posts I made after I got out of hospital, like four days after my anaesthetic. Did I tell you about my post-op drugged fangirling moment?

*pulls you out and squishles you*

my revenge for your mention of the 'n' word. *shudder* but no, no lung paralysis even if you do have a... t-thing.

I hadn't even considered lung paralysis until my coworker, in trying to reassure me earlier, said that was the reason why tubes were put in. I'm now skeptical about how much she really knows about this shtuff.

Usually when using general anesthesia, both a neuromuscular blocking agent (to induce paralysis), and an endotracheal tube (to maintain a patent airway) are used. The paralysis is to make sure that the muscles at and near the site of the surgery aren't twitching, or spasming. You have to use narcotics and sedatives or anesthetic gases as the same time to maintain a hazy level of consciousness or keep you all the way out.

Most third molar extractions are performed without general anesthesia, though. Either local alone, or IV sedation and local are used, without a neuromuscular blocking agent, and without an endotracheal tube.

Good luck!

Oooh, right from the doctor's mouth! Love it. Thank you for the reassurance and info. :) I think it would be overkill to paralyze me, most definitely, if they can just sedate me with an IV. I'm very good at lying quietly, especially when drugged. ;)

Yeah, I didn't get general anesthesia (they don't like to give it to asthmatics if they can help it), they just sedated me with an IV. I remember them sticking the needle in my arm and one of those nitrous masks on my face, and then next thing I knew I was in my mom's car. And then I was on the couch. And then I fell asleep like 5 times WHILE going to the bathroom.
