Um, let's say I have discovered ANTS IN MY NEW BEDROOM. SOME OF THEM WITH WINGS.

Let's say I also have an International Wonder Doggie who likes to eat them, and also tends to hoover everything she finds on the floor in case it's tasty.

This is VERY IMPORTANT. Those of you who have known me since last year may recall that I DO NOT DO WELL WITH ANTS, and may start sleeping in my car if situations do not improve. I will not make a tag linking all my ant posts, because then I will have to see the word ants on my livejournal at all times and that will NOT BE OKAY.

ALSOOOO, I have registered mylittleredgirl.com! (Do not check it; I'm still waiting for Approval From Server Peeps before I can upload things.) Does anyone have a rec for truly fabulous software that makes uploading, filing & storing fanfic awesome and easy? I can do the non-awesome, non-easy I-rock-at-basic-HTML thing myself, but if anyone uses something magical for their website that they'd like to direct me to...

I'm terribly excited about having my own domain name. I feel like My Little Red Girl needs to be a business of some kind. (People in real estate talk all the time about BRANDING yourself and BRANDING your name and BRANDING your image... I'm getting caught up in all the branding enthusiasm.) It sounds like the sort of business that would sell children's shoes, though, and I might not want that to be on the same website as all the porn.

I'm hiding in my living room.

*is still being freaked out by the idea of ants that fly*

I did however secure a victory over the normal fly that has been dive bombing our heads for the past few days... The fly is no more... Which is a bit sad, but I gave it plenty of opportunity to leave of it's own free will! ;)
Trialiatrialia on May 11th, 2008 08:25 pm (UTC)
Ahhhhh! I have no real problem with regular ants, but the flying kind SQUICK ME GOOD. ARGH! I feel so sorry for you.

Salt won't hurt your dog, will it? That's what I always put down over anthills and such.

As for the site... FileZilla FTW. You can find a free download of it via Google :)
Little Red: cheer - cleaning - foldedwingsmylittleredgirl on May 11th, 2008 09:18 pm (UTC)
Dog will lick up all the salt instantly, I think. But I might be able to put it on windowsills out of her reach.

Oooooh, I will check out filezilla!! Thanks!

Ummm... you could try red-chilly pepper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum

the hotter kind the better, just split it open, the fume usually draw the ants away... just hope your curious dog won't eat it ;) and just in case he does, one bite and he won't do that again and it's not dangerous to his health.

HAHAHAHAHA... hahahaha. Um. I might really love to see her face when she licks it the first time.

I'm such an evil pet owner, though. I also love to play fetch with her on the linoleum, because it's hilarious to watch her paws skitter around. (Hey, she doesn't HAVE to keep playing with me...)

You can use the little ant traps if you can find somewhere to put them that the dog can't get into (and is still near their foraging spots or where they get in). Might help to put bitter apple stuff on the traps to discourage the dog. And apparently borax/boric acid kills ants but isn't much trouble for mammals - that is in Drax and Terro but NOT Raid or Ortho.

Meanwhile, clean up the place really carefully - make sure there are no crumbs and no food (including dog food) that is not sealed up in plastic and no dirty plates. Kill as many as you can with smushing or vacuum them up, and the internets suggest wiping up their trails with citrus repellent/cleaner. And if you can figure out where the bastards are coming from, put salt in the hole and then close it up somehow.

They aren't near food. They're hanging around my window and my walls. There's no way to plug the windows, either, because they are crappy single-paned glass that don't close and aren't fully attached to the frames. :-/

I worry about poisoning them with ant traps because I'm worried she'll eat poisoned ants (even though I can put the traps out of her reach). But if there is stuff that is not deadly to mammals, I will try that!

I will spray citrusy things on walls & windows to see if that helps, too! Thanks!
ornithoptercatornithoptercat on May 12th, 2008 12:56 am (UTC)
If you mean that the panes are loose in the frames, you can fix that with caulk or putty (ask at hardware store for an appropriate kind and exactly how to do it) - chisel out any old loose putty first. There's less you can do about the entire window sash fitting loosely... if you expect to be keeping it closed, or there is a big gap at the bottom, you can stick strips of fabric or foam in there to fill the gaps (put them there with it open and close the window on them).

Not only will this keep out bugs, it also improves the ability of your house to keep heat in/out. Which means, you know, your bills. So DO EET.

Crap! She's on to the conspiracy!

I think it's probably a coincidence, though, really. :) I'm no longer full of commute-related exhaustion! I realized I have been ignoring everything fun! I have sekrit desire to be famous on the internets again! (Okay, that last one might not be true.)

You have lost internets? Are you in crazy foreign countries again?

We chose internet over TV. I feel it was a wise choice.

ANTS. GROSS. We've been waging our own war with ants once again. Gross!
peanutbutterer: Helpfulpeanutbutterer on May 12th, 2008 05:28 am (UTC)
Try Terro for the ants. In my experience (we had an ant attracting rental at one point) it works much better than those little trap/house thingies. Plus, the internet proclaims Terro to be completely harmless for the puppy.
miera_cmiera_c on May 13th, 2008 12:06 am (UTC)
Baking Soda.

Seriously. It will drive the ants away and won't poison the pooch.
qwirky on May 13th, 2008 11:32 pm (UTC)
Ants are gross. Flying ants are grosser. ;_; I use Raid. But then we had the exterminator come, and most of the ants died, yay.

For fics, you could install efiction (efiction.org) and set it up so only you can sign-up and upload fics. But it may be a little bit confusing to install if you don't have experience installing scripts! =x

Ooooh! And yet hrm. I don't think I'm smrt enough for that sort of thing. I will check it out right nao! I may decide that, due to lazy, it will be easier to just upload things. :-/
Phrenitis: stewie oh noes! (chibi_rei)phrenitis on May 14th, 2008 04:42 pm (UTC)
Oh DUDE. I don't think those are ants with wings... those are termites. :\

Are they red-ish? And a little larger than normal ants? And the wings shed everywhere? And they stay near windows/walls? --> http://www.termite-i.com/images/termite-picture-1.jpg

I had this at my last apartment and it was DIRE. Call the landlord and demand fumigation no matter how many people they have to put up in a hotel. Good news is they only swarm for about a week once or twice a year. If that makes it any better.
Little Red: peanuts - aughhhh!mylittleredgirl on May 14th, 2008 09:54 pm (UTC)

(I don't think these landlords do things like "fix things.")

Okay, the idea of swarming is making me want to pass out a little. All that aside, though, these look different than my ants (at least, from a great shrieking distance). They DO stay on windows/walls, tho. :-/ But some of them are totally normal-looking black ants, and there were only 2 of them with wings, so, um, OH MY GOD.

I haven't actually seen a single ant in a few days. I think they read livejournal. This happened at my last apartment, too. I got all ready to move out and set fire to the place and then, GONE. They seem to show up right as it gets warmer outside.
